About The Public Montessori Collaborative California
Our story
The Public Montessori Collaborative - California serves as a network aimed at advancing Montessori education within the public school system across California. We focus on supporting and connecting California public Montessori schools, sharing best practices, and advocating for Montessori principles in public education policies.
One of our key objectives is advocating for the recognition of Montessori teaching credentials as state teaching credentials. Montessori credential recognition would pave the way for more public Montessori Schools and greater access to quality Montessori learning for all students in California. Our structure includes member schools, educators, and administrators who collaborate to promote and sustain Montessori education as a viable public school option in California.
The Public Montessori Collaborative - California operates under the non-profit umbrella of Urban Montessori Charter School (UMCS) located in Oakland, California. UMCS is Oakland's only public, tuition-free Montessori school and has been serving students from TK - 8th grade since 2012. In addition to its school day programming, UMCS also operates a tuition-free Montessori Teacher Credentialing Residency program, The Public Montessori Institute of Oakland (PMIO), which is the process of MACTE accreditation and offers all UMCS staff and staff from neighboring Public Montessori Schools, access to free, Elementary 6 - 12 Montessori Teaching Credentials.
